Admittedly, not as nice in finishing as Vacheron Constantin, but much more realistic to own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give me a chance to open your heart to this contrarian brand. If you walk through the doors of the IWC Museum in Schaffhausen, you start to realize: this brand isn\u2019t surviving by accident. It\u2019s not just marketing polish. It\u2019s invention, grit, and an attitude to dare to be different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My kids were excited to visit\u2014my son a bit camera-shy, can you see him in the picture?.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An American in Schaffhausen: The Start of Industrial Swiss Watchmaking<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1868, Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American engineer, had a radical idea: bring the American system of interchangeable parts and industrial efficiency to the Swiss watch world. Find affordable yet skilled labour, and bring the beauty of Swiss watches to the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American watches were of good quality, affordable, production could scale to the masses, and servicing them was considered from the start. Parts were available and interchangeable. Not as pretty as their swiss counterparts maybe\u2014but have you ever seen a nicely finished Waltham, Elgin, or Hamilton? The Swiss watch industry was then dominated by cottage workshops and hand-fitting artisans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His company, International Watch Company, built its factory in Schaffhausen, harnessing the power of the Rhine, the skill of its people, and impacting Swiss horology forever. Jones helped transplant the \u201cAmerican system\u201d to Switzerland and built one of the country\u2019s earliest fully industrialized watch factories\u2014but he wasn\u2019t the first Swiss maker to adopt factory\/industrial methods. Longines opened its integrated \u201cLes Longines\u201d factory in 1867, a year earlier, with mechanised, serial production. The difference from traditional Swiss \u00e9tablissage was huge: centralized production, machine tools, gauges, and interchangeability instead of dispersed cottage parts later hand-fitted by \u00e9tablisseurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Timeline of IWC\u2019s Innovations and Rarities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wanted to visit the IWC Museum because my very first watch\u2014and the reason I\u2019m now in this world of watchmaking\u2014is an IWC. I own two now: a nice stainless steel Spitfire chronograph from around 2022 and a Cal. 52 pocket watch from around 1896.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I set upon the museum to look up key pieces that are different, daring, and technological marvels. I\u2019m not here to dive into the countless details the pieces have\u2014Google, and you\u2019ll find a plentiful variety of sites and videos from people much more into the weeds then me. With this blog I merely want to highlight and hopefully inspire a few to warm up to this brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve done my best to find correct information and factcheck, I apologise to those that find mistakes and get upset over them.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of these watches reflects a chapter in IWC\u2019s evolution: some bold, some bizarre, some arguably useless\u2014but all memorable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1885 \u2013 Pallweber Pocket Watch<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world\u2019s first mass-produced digital display watch\u2014with jumping hour and minute discs in place of hands. IWC wasn\u2019t the first to think of a jump-hour (Vacheron Constantin had a jumping-hour pocket watch as early as 1824), and Austrian engineer Josef Pallweber patented his disc-display in 1883. But IWC was the brand that licensed it and scaled it from 1885\u20131887, producing thousands and making the look famous. It caused quite a stir\u2014novel, futuristic, and unlike anything else\u2014yet proved short-lived due to cost and energy demands; production ceased after a couple of years, which is why these are so collectible now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_367\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-367\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-367\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image14-300x206.png\" alt=\"IWC Pallweber digital pocket watch from 1885 with jumping discs\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 19th-century \u201cdigital\u201d display \u2014 brilliant idea, two-year lifespan.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1935 \u2013 Calibre 87 Rectangular Movement<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a world-first, but IWC\u2019s first tonneau\/rectangular wristwatch movement\u2014an Art Deco pivot away from its pocket-watch roots. Size note: the classic IWC B-Uhr (Ref. 431) was a giant 55 mm, with that massive crown for gloved use. At the time, it flopped; IWC now calls it \u201cour most brilliant failure.\u201d Today it\u2019s cult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_369\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-369\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image16-206x300.png\" alt=\"IWC Ingenieur SL Jumbo Ref. 1832 designed by G\u00e9rald Genta in 1976\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">G\u00e9rald Genta\u2019s stainless steel statement piece \u2014 a \u201cbrilliant failure\u201d turned cult classic.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1978 \u2013 Ref. 3510 Compass Watch<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In collaboration with Porsche Design, this was the first production wristwatch with a built-in magnetic compass, hidden under a flip-up dial module\u2014launched in late 1978 in black or \u201cNATO olive.\u201d It later evolved into the 3551 with additional displays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of a compass in a wristwatch is older: patents for compass wristwatches appear in 1956 and 1958, and small-run Octo \u2018Compass\u2019 pieces show up in the mid-1960s\u2014so IWC\u2019s real \u2018first\u2019 is bringing the concept to proper series production.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_366\" style=\"width: 194px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-366\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image13-184x300.png\" alt=\"IWC Compass Watch Ref. 3510\/3551 with built-in magnetic compass\" width=\"184\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tells the time, shows the moon, finds your way home.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A nice addition to the compass line is this Qiblah compass, helping people find the direction of Mekka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image18-132x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a compass is cool, but having a sun dial on your watch is much cooler and essentially the same as a compass if you know how to use it. I found this beauty in the MIH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image11-135x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1980 \u2013 Ref. 3700 Titan Chronograph<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not the first titanium watch ever (that honor goes to the Citizen X-8 Titanium Chronometer in 1970), but IWC\u2019s Porsche Design Titan was the first titanium chronograph and an early series-production titanium watch\/bracelet combo\u2014decades ahead of mainstream adoption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_357\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-357\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image4-235x300.png\" alt=\"IWC Porsche Design Titan Chronograph Ref. 3700, first titanium chronograph\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World\u2019s first titanium wristwatch \u2014 light as a feather, tough as a dive tank.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1982 \u2013 Ocean 2000<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pared-back, FA Porsche\u2013designed dive watch in titanium, rated to 2000 m (200 bar). Why? If you go into divers, why not test the barriers of what\u2019s possible? If it\u2019s worth doing, it\u2019s worth overdoing. One of the earliest serial titanium divers and a statement of engineering minimalism that still looks modern.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_359\" style=\"width: 205px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-359\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image6-195x300.png\" alt=\"IWC Ocean 2000 titanium dive watch rated to 2000 meters\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A titanium torpedo rated to 2000 meters \u2014 because why not?<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was impressed with the 2.000M only to see the Rolex Deep Sea Special in the MIH a week later, this watch went to 10.000M! Inside baseball: it\u2019s based on the architecture of the Valjoux 7750 (hand-wound cal. 18680), heavily re-worked. It didn\u2019t try to one-up Patek\u2019s most baroque pieces, but it delivered serious haute horlogerie in a wearably robust package\u2014and helped recast IWC as more than \u201ctool watches only.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_360\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.othryswatches.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image7-202x300.png\" alt=\"IWC Grand Complication Ref. 3770 with perpetual calendar, minute repeater, chronograph\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perpetual calendar, minute repeater, chronograph \u2014 all adjusted from a single crown.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><b>Pellaton Was Here\u2026 Maybe?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019d think they\u2019d shout about it. Albert Pellaton\u2019s winding system\u2014developed in 1950\u2014is still the backbone of IWC\u2019s automatics. Seiko\u2019s Magic Lever? It\u2019s Pellaton\u2019s concept, simplified. Yet at the museum\u2026 I either missed it or it wasn\u2019t emphasized. Maybe I was distracted trying to keep my son and his coloring from turning into modern art on a boutique display.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, it\u2019s worth celebrating and certainly deserves a separate mention in a story to open people\u2019s hearts to the craftsmanship and innovation of IWC. Pellaton\u2019s dual-pawl winding mechanism replaced more complex reversing gears with a smoother, more efficient system that\u2019s still used today\u2014now with ceramic components.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The below model is the one we have at Zadkine. Exhibits are paired with interactive screens and a multimedia brand history.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Parking? Easy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Park across the street: Perfect for partners who\u2019d rather stroll than scroll through 150 years of gear trains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Touchscreen tablets: Yes\u2014interactive stations and multimedia displays throughout.
